NPI number

An NPI, or National Provider Identifier, is a unique ten-digit number that CMS assigns to individual healthcare providers and to healthcare provider organizations in the United States.

The NPI system covers both individual providers, known as Type 1, and organizations such as clinics or group practices, known as Type 2, and a single practice setting may have both kinds of numbers associated with it. Confirm the NPI record and account details are current.

NPI numbers and the associated provider or organization details are published in a public federal registry, which makes the number checkable by third parties without the provider submitting any separate paperwork for that purpose. That is distinct from a state medical license, which is checked through a separate state licensing board lookup rather than the NPI registry.

PB requires an NPI to verify that an account belongs to a licensed healthcare provider or clinic rather than a member of the public. Have this number ready, along with basic practice information, when opening an account.

An NPI is required for PB account verification; it does not by itself establish current state licensure.
