Product insert

A product insert is the document a supplier includes with a specific lot that describes handling, storage conditions, and identifying information for that lot, and, where applicable, reconstitution guidance.

Unlike a general product page or sales sheet, a product insert is lot-specific: it travels with the physical shipment and should match the lot number on the vial or package it accompanies. Review the insert supplied with the lot and confirm which storage and handling instructions apply, including reconstitution guidance for lyophilized formats.

The insert is a reference document for identification and handling, not a source of clinical guidance; it does not substitute for a clinic's own protocols, dosing decisions, or procedural judgment, which remain the responsibility of the treating physician. Suppliers in this category do not advise on clinical use, and an insert that strayed into that territory would be a concern rather than a feature.

When evaluating a product, ask whether the insert is lot-specific or generic, and whether it is available for review before purchase so handling requirements can be built into clinic workflow ahead of a shipment's arrival. A mismatch between the lot number on an insert and the lot number on the product itself is worth flagging immediately rather than assuming it is a paperwork error.

Checking that insert and product lot numbers match, and reviewing storage guidance before a shipment arrives, avoids handling mistakes that have nothing to do with the product itself.
