Tri-lineage differentiation

Tri-lineage differentiation is a laboratory assay showing that a cell population can be induced, under specific culture conditions, to form osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. It is one of the three ISCT minimal criteria used to identify a mesenchymal stromal cell.

Tri-lineage differentiation is one of the ISCT minimal criteria. Request the underlying sample-specific documentation rather than relying on a general claim of multipotency.

A positive tri-lineage result demonstrates multipotency in that specific sample under laboratory conditions. It is a cell-culture finding, not a description of any clinical process, and it depends on the cells in the sample being alive and capable of proliferation. If a supplier cites both tri-lineage and viability data, confirm they come from the same sample.

Ask whether differentiation data describes source tissue, an earlier research sample, or the finished lot being purchased, since these are not interchangeable.

Distinguishing a tri-lineage claim about tissue research from a claim about the actual lot being purchased helps buyers avoid conflating research data with product specification.
